The owner, who requested anonymity because of the value of his collection, has had a lifelong passion for motorcycles. He has a 1927 Harley-Davidson, and several other Harleys. He also owns motorcycles from various decades that carry such names as Indian, Triumph, Honda and Yamaha.

The garage, which cost him approximately $250,000, is the culmination of a dream.

“Some day I hope to retire,” he said. “And when I do I wanted a nice, big garage.”

He hasn’t retired yet. But he already has his garage.

Bob Riemer, the owner-operator of Mukwonago Remodeling, built the garage. Despite the recession, Riemer says more and more people want big garages. He’s even ready to call it a trend.

“I’m seeing a lot more of these jobs,” Riemer said. “I feel it’s going to be a big part of our business in the future. It’s the one end of the market that’s still going. Even though it’s tough, people still want their goodies.”

Blending with the lake

When Riemer and the owner got together to talk about the project, the owner wanted to be assured the new garage would blend well with the lake.

The project began in July, and involved eight or nine workers, Riemer said. There are still some finishing touches to be made, including adding a few more motorcycle emblems on the floor.

Once the garage is finished, the old garage will come down, and work will commence on the house.

“This is his baby,” Riemer said of the new garage.

Riemer has a theory about these big garages. Just as some women might want a kitchen a certain way, guys want their dream garage.

“I think guys are looking for a place to do their thing a little bit,” he said with a chuckle. “Basements these days are often turned into living areas, so that’s no longer a place for storage or for tools. These guys need a place to store their toys, their snowmobiles, their cars, their trucks, their yard tractors, everything. It depends on what they are into.

“One guy was into motocross racing, so he wanted his garage set up that way.”

Dave Pekel, who runs Pekel Construction and Remodeling in Wauwatosa, says it’s not just people of means who are in love with bigger and cooler garages.

“It’s not just about people with elaborate collections, or people who don’t have to worry about money,” Pekel said. “It’s folks like you and me, average consumers, living in modestly sized homes who have run out of space.”

Pekel’s hobby is building furniture. “That’s what my garage is for,” he said. “I don’t have any room for vehicles.”

Pekel said he is building a 1,800-square-foot garage for a New Berlin man. “It has three levels,” Pekel said, adding that it is part of a $1 million house makeover.

In recent weeks, Riemer has been approached by five different potential customers, each of whom wants a garage designed to their specification.

“We’re not advertising this work,” Riemer said. “I’m a general remodeling contractor. But they are looking me up in the area, Mukwonago, Waukesha, all over the place.”

The Lac La Belle owner was particularly picky about the floor. The floor has a special epoxy coating, which means if he drops a can of oil, it’s easily wiped up. He can even wash those motorcycles inside and rinse the dirt and grime down the drain.

“It makes the place look tremendously better and it doesn’t show dirt,” Riemer said.
