Then, there are products that need to have a protective coating to save them from harsh atmospheric exposures like the sun, snow or rains. Two such items that immediately come to mind include floors and boats. Primarily the idea of having an external coating is always to impart a longer life to the product. In the process, though, you add to the aesthetic value of the item.
Epoxy coatings do an excellent job, be it for floors or otherwise. If you are thinking in terms of providing your garage floor or you warehouse with a coating of an epoxy based paint it would help you to know a few things about this chemical. An understanding of the product in terms of its composition and usefulness will help you to choose the right material at the right price and thus make the whole project economical and well worth.

There are various types of epoxy coatings, each prepared for a particular type of treatment and application. Yet they all have a few common characteristics. The notables are:
* High resistance to chemicals
* Extremely durable
* Low porosity, meaning other chemicals (like oils or greases) can’t seep thru them so easily
* High bond strength
You may agree that any floor coating necessarily should have all the above properties.
Epoxy floor materials have all these characteristics that makes it a favorite for improving the dependability and looks of any garage floor. There are other products that give similar effect to your floor but epoxy has easy availability and is cost effective too.
Let’s now understand how epoxy paints bring around that magical change to the floors. An epoxy comprises of two parts: a base and a curing agent. When we mix these two in a definite ratio, a chemical reaction takes place that releases heat. This in turn hardens the mixture to an inert plastic. It takes less than twenty-four hours for the reaction to complete. That makes it very convenient to use for a lot of applications.
Well there is other side of the coin too. Like any other product or equipment, epoxy has its limitations also. It tends to get yellowish and chalky over time. It’s not very friendly with sunrays as the ultra-violet element of sunrays breaks down the chemical bonding that causes yellowish effect and greatly affects is durable qualities. But that should not really be a matter of concern as the final floor can be treated with clear coat of another chemical that protects it from the ill effects of UV rays. Of course that add to the total cost of the project but is worth that extra buck for the extra life it gives to the epoxy.
A novice may find it a bit tricky to handle epoxies. Being a chemical compound gives it a specific shelf life or time for being used. The shelf life may vary from a few minutes to some hours, depending on formulation and handling. As noted already, heat is the consequence of a chemical reaction. So, the mixture gets very hot just before it settles down on the surface. Further, epoxy paint for garage floor need to be applied at temperatures above fifty degrees because at lower temperatures it is too thick to be cured.
And last but perhaps the most important is that an epoxy covering is best trusted to a professional, experienced in handling these chemicals. Epoxy paints are rather expensive and there are many chances of its getting spoiled if not handled competently. To avoid its wastage and thus have its optimum utilization, it is strongly recommended that you hire the services of an expert for giving that bright different look to your garage floor.
